Avertisment de la Nicolae Iorga: „Greșelile nu se iartă, ci se repară”. 84 de ani de la asasinarea marelui savant și patriot român
Nicolae Iorga, una dintre cele mai proeminente personalități ale culturii și istoriei românești, a fost asasinat pe 27 noiembrie 1940, la vârsta de 69 de ani. Istoricul, politicianul și fostul prim-ministru al României a căzut victimă unui act de răzbunare orchestrat de către membrii Mișcării Legionare, în contextul tulburărilor politice din perioada statului național-legionar.
Contextul asasinării
În perioada interbelică, Iorga s-a implicat activ în viața politică, fiind prim-ministru, ministru și membru al Partidului Național Liberal. A fost, de asemenea, un critic vocal al extremismului, inclusiv al Mișcării Legionare, pe care o considera o amenințare la adresa democrației și stabilității României. Criticile sale la adresa liderului legionar Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, precum și sprijinul său pentru măsurile represive împotriva Mișcării Legionare luate de regele Carol al II-lea, l-au transformat într-o țintă.
În 1938, Nicolae Iorga a fost implicat indirect în arestarea lui Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, deoarece acesta depusese o plângere penală pentru calomnie împotriva liderului legionar. Codreanu a fost condamnat și ulterior executat în același an, ceea ce a alimentat resentimentele legionarilor împotriva lui Iorga.
Asasinatul
După preluarea puterii de către guvernul legionar condus de generalul Ion Antonescu și Horia Sima în septembrie 1940, legionarii au început să se răzbune pe cei considerați responsabili pentru moartea lui Codreanu și pentru persecuțiile anterioare. În noaptea de 27 noiembrie 1940, un grup de legionari l-a răpit pe Nicolae Iorga de la locuința sa din Sinaia. A fost dus în pădurea de la Strejnic, lângă Ploiești, unde a fost împușcat.
Motivațiile asasinilor
Asasinarea lui Nicolae Iorga a fost justificată de Mișcarea Legionară ca o răzbunare pentru rolul său perceput în suprimarea mișcării și în condamnarea lui Codreanu. Cu toate acestea, crima a stârnit o condamnare generalizată atât în țară, cât și în străinătate, iar gestul a contribuit la deteriorarea imaginii Mișcării Legionare și la sporirea tensiunilor dintre Antonescu și legionari.
Asasinarea lui Nicolae Iorga rămâne unul dintre cele mai tragice momente în istoria României, simbolizând pericolul extremismului politic și al violenței ca instrument de luptă ideologică.

Operă lui istorică cuprinde mai multe domenii: monografii de oraşe, de domnii, de familii, istoria bisericii, a armatei, comerţului, literaturii, tipăriturilor, a călătorilor în străinătate etc.
